Mojikaki

Hiragana · Katakana · Alphabet

Trace it with a finger, in stroke order.

Mojikaki (もじかき, “writing letters”) is a writing app for children from age 3. They trace hiragana, katakana and the alphabet with a finger or an Apple Pencil, one stroke at a time, and each character they write earns a medal.

The app is in Japanese, made for children who speak Japanese, in Japan or abroad.

Writing さ on an iPad

Trace and write

The model moves in stroke order

The model strokes move in stroke order, and your child traces them from the starting mark, one stroke at a time. When the order and the direction are right, the next stroke comes; when it does not go well, the model moves again to show the way.

The tracing is more or less forgiving depending on your child’s age, from 3 to 6 and over. Each character is read aloud in Japanese as its screen opens. Your child picks one of four crayons.

さ written, with its bronze medal

A medal for each character

Write it, earn a medal

No score or percentage is ever shown. A medal for each character and today’s check marks show your child’s progress, day by day.

  • Bronzethe first time it is written
  • Silverwritten on ten different days
  • Goldwritten without the model on three different days

Words

Their name, and the words they love

When a parent adds words, such as your child’s name or でんしゃ (train), your child writes them one character at a time. Small っ and ゃ and the long-vowel mark ー can be written too.

The album of the characters a child wrote

Album

Every character, kept in an album

Each character your child writes is kept just as it was drawn, in crayon, to look back on. A drawing can also be played back, in the order and at the speed it was written.

Katakana and the alphabet

The alphabet on four lines

The unlock adds all 71 katakana and the 52 capital and small letters of the alphabet. Letters are written on the four lines of an English exercise book: the capitals in print, the small letters in cursive.
